I'm in the minority here regarding this: I prefer Halo Single Player to Gears, I thought the Halo trilogy was much more epic in scope and implementation.
I prefer the visceral nature of execution to any Halo multiplayer mode though, so for MP, I'd go with Gears.
Overall, I've spent more time with Gears than I have with Halo, so if forced to choose, I'd choose Gears.
