| Kantor said: Yes, but in sacrificing the hardware, you sacrifice the low cost. The Wii would be the same price as the HD consoles when it launched. If all big games were ported to Wii, then the Wii would need the same control scheme as the HD consoles. Hang on, same hardware as the HD consoles, same controls as the HD consoles. It would become nothing more than a successor to the GameCube, and would currently be in last place. So I would say Nintendo made the right decision. |
I was speaking about the next Nintendo home console... of course, Nintendo made a good choice at the start of this gen: they weren't sure if the Wii would be a success or not, so they decided to stay "low profile" in the hardware specs, to balance the costs of the new wiimote tech, that's already part of history...
Plus, we all know Nintendo only sell games and consoles, and can't afford to sell consoles at loss: but even then, back in 2006, they could have made it slightly more powerful, 720p compatible, and sell it for $300, which was, anyway, the price for Wii on the black market for two years, when it was permanently sold-out... Nintendo lost millions and millions that way, btw...
But my point was: the need of a Wii update, sooner than later... this gen is now already 3/4 years old, and the tech is now more affordable than in 2006... PS360 are already in the 250/300 price range, so Nintendo could easily release a new console with the same kind of specs, for the same kind of price... and still sell the actual Wii for $150, and then $100...
And about the software: i think all games could be ported to Wii with a little bit of talent and imagination... and for the games really better with "traditionnal controls", Nintendo has already the solution for good ports, it's called the Classic Controller... all PS360 games could be released on a more powerful Wii... now, maybe some will be poorly designed, but that's another problem... :)
