Its a pretty clever reference to the gamma radiation given off when a radioactive substance decomposes, the rate of which is known as its half-life!

Haha sorry if that sounds reduciulously nerdy, but im writing my thesis atm!

Even more directly, lambda is also used for the decay constant.

 

I thought tau was used as the decay constant (matching the "t" sound for time)? At least that's how we did it in physics lab.
