@OP: ever changed your sound settings?
are you using surround sound or normal stereo?
sometimes there could be strange, feaky problems in some audio playback if Linear PCM is selected or not selected in Sound setup options depending on your sound equipment
Try playing around with those settings, but remember what you stared off with if you ever have to put them back
