As a female, I wouldn't entirely agree with the article, but I would say this: I like it when my men smells good, has good hygene and takes at least a little care of his appearence. I mean we women go through so much trouble to look great for you guys, so why not get the men to look at least a little nice too?
However I wouldn't say they need to go as far as going to a spa, get their nails done and such.
Emotion wise, I think a guy would have more of a supportive role. If I cry, he's there to listen, pick me up and cheer me up. It's okay for him to cry, once in a while, but not all the time.
