Games that have already been released on another platform generally have a lower score. RE4 got 96 on the PS2 and Gamecube, while the Wii version (praised to be the best of the lot) has only 91 on Metacritic. Oblivion on the PS3 isn't even a very clear case of advancement. I've only seen a few videos of it, but while draw distance and the outdoors looked better in general, the actual character models looked like they were zombies. Oblivion is a pretty demanding game, so I imagine different hardware will have different strengths and weaknesses running it.
I was actually expecting the PS3 to have a higher score with many multiplat games, because of the (currently) lower standards of PS3 games. Not trying to troll here, but if you look at Metacritic scores before CoD4 was released you'll find that the highest scores were 93, 89, 88, 86, 86. If you take out multiplats and go a few weeks earlier to before Ratchet was out you'll get 86, 84, 84, after which I'm not sure. Meanwhile the 360 exclusives (not counting the PC) were 96, 94, 94, 90 and something.
I'm not trying to argue any other point here other than that if you take ten guys who've only played the PS3 games, ten guys who only played the 360 games, and give the different groups a bunch of multiplat games, the PS3 gamers would naturally be more impressed by them.
The fact that this isn't happening is making me rethink the logic of this scenario. =/
