Being serious though, I think the point being made was that the NPC squadmates can get in the way some time and it would have been nice to be able to interact with your men more. If that meant your character was a higher rank it really wouldn't have been much of an issue from a development standpoint to make you a higher rank....the squad commands themselves might have been an issue.
