@Montana - I guess we disagree on this one, it's a matter of taste I suppose.

But if the game had the name "Final Fantasy" it would be above 85 on metacritic right now.

Please stop this. Final Fantasy does not give extra points. I figured people would have shut up about that by time being that Persona 3 and 4 were rated just as highly.

I AM SICK OF IT too!

Persona 4 is proof that such mentality is wrong!

Seriously every Final Fantasy game has a polish other JRPG's can only have a wet dream about

& each one tries to push the formula in some way or another!!

Even FF12 which is "hated" by fans was adored by critics

@Luney Tune

FF12 was made by the FF Tactics team..

lets see how the traditions FF team do with FF13

so far its looking so positive!

You guys fail to see my argument. Just because another JRPG franchise also manages to get great reviews does not mean that the words "Final Fantasy" don't bring in good reviews. It just means that Persona 3 & 4 are also really good games. But there are just as many amazing JRPG's taht come nowhere close to that in ratings. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say any Final Fantasy game is over-rated. FFXII, as well as X-2 (just to name the two most hated ones), are both amazing games IMO. If anything, FFXII deserves to be rated higher as it is easily the greatest RPG from last generation.

What I'm trying to say that almost EVERY other JRPG is underrated. If Lost Odyssey was a Final Fantasy game, there is a good chance it would be AAA on metacritic right now. It's as simple as that. Critics would not bitch about every small issue they have with the game.

What's your basis in saying Reviewers don't automatically upgrade Final Fantasy reviews?  They have done it for other games, from Grand Theft Auto to Nintendo titles, while downscoring other games which have just as good (or better) merits to the same games but don't have the popularity or marketing as those series.

And reviewers aren't a good measure of what makes a good game in the first place.  Regardless, not all reviewers upscore every FF game anyway.  Back when FFXII came out, nearly every game review site was giving the game a near perfect or perfect score.  But it was pretty evident from comparing their reviews to actual experience of playing the game that the reviewers judged the game mostly based on preconceptions and very limited gameplay experience.  Yet GameTrailers, another review site, put up their own review of the game, which was significantly lower than the majority of the others (8.0), and backed their review up with solid examples of where the game lacked in both gameplay and design.

On the flip side, they posted a review for a less popular and more 'niche' RPG outside of Japan, Dragon Quest VIII, actually scoring it higher than FFXII (9.0).  Once again providing solid examples of the games strengths and reasons why it deserved its score.  While most other sites were downscoring it (between 8.0 and 8.5) for simply not having the name recognition or marketing potential of a series like Final Fantasy.

You guys can keep bringing up examples like Persona and Disgaea all you want, but in the end, those series still had a solid hype and marketing put behind them.  Review sites pick up on these things and fluctuate their scores up or down a few points accordingly to appease their readers.  This has been shown time and time again, or did we not learn anything from the GTAIV and Kane & Lynch fiascos?
