I don't think anyone is really defending it. It sucks no doubt.
However this is just more bs spin against microsoft. The simple fact is if you purchased a 3rd party device that isn't licensed by Microsoft its your fault for doing so if they end up causing it to quit working. Something similar would be the R4 that is illegally used on nintendo Ds's. No it isn't exactly the same thing but neither are licensed products so it doesn't matter.
Sony has been down this road before with digital cameras. They force you to buy their shitty format if you wish to store your pictures. No one beoches about that however.
