Dodgy sounds right, cheap too. Generally enemies either stay put and shoot or try to rush you. Not a whole let else in the way of tactics. Even on easy mode they seem perfectly accurate, which is annoying considering Rocket Soldiers from over hundred feet can hit you. Luckily you can dodge the projectile at that distance.
Sometimes the NPC's like to exploit cheap tricks. Bionic enemies have an annoying paralyzing move that basically makes you completely helpless for about five seconds. Can't do anything, not even order your teammates to help you, you just have to pray you survive long enough to get up. Bigger enemies seem to love exploiting the beat down move. When you run you automatically pistol/rifle whip people. It rarely works for me since anytime I run into something I'm pushed left or right and usually past them before the melee attack happens and does little damage. When the computer uses it seems to hurt a lot more, they also don't seem to get should've aside, and they actually spam it by starting another sprint while right next to you.
It’s certainly not a short game either, but the whole side mission exploring the galaxy aspect is fairly weak. After you get your ship, you can go about anywhere. But pretty much every planet you can land on (not associated with the main story) is the same. Each one is a rocky chunk of mostly barren and empty land you can drive around on. And they always tend to have one of three things: A Base, a warehouse, or a mine. All three are pretty small, and one base always looks exactly the same as one other base, one mine looks like another etc. What’s inside does change, but typically it’s some group of enemies that needs to be killed or negotiated with.
It wouldn’t be so bad except a lot of side missions send you to these places, and that winds up being kind of a time sink. You get a mission, leave wherever you’re at, go to certain system in certain cluster. Land on planet in Mako. (That’s your vehicle) Drive your way to the building you need to reach. (In most cases there will be only one) Do your business. I was getting fairly annoyed with these by the end of the game since they most of them tend to be extremely similar. Just how many horrible labs gone wrong/mines that unearthed something dangerous/criminal strongholds are there in the universe? Even the more creative ones are still marred by the load screens and inevitable drives through rocky terrain to reach them.
There’s always other points of interests, but there almost always limited to debris, minerals, or artifacts. All of which are small things you can investigate for a quick XP/Cash/items.
