Lost Odyssey was successful. Since when is 800k+ sales a failure for a jrpg? Especially for a new IP? Look at the sales figures of different games in the genre. Lost Odyssey sold very well. Blue Dragon also sold over half a million and was the 360's most successful game in Japan. RPGs are actually pretty niche outside of the main big established IPs. They are not as successful as you think they are. Just look at the sales. See this is the thing. People see that Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, Pokemon, Monster Hunter, etc. sells well worldwide so they just assume that the genre in general is just incredibly popular. Trust me, Sakaguchi must be very pleased that 800,000+ people bought Lost Odyssey. Expecting Lost Odyssey to be a Final Fantasy killer is like expecting Killzone to be a Halo killer. Not going to happen overnight, if ever.
I could see them developing for the Wii (with a new IP with a different publisher). Wii rpgs haven't been selling very well but Mistwalker could sell enough to generate a profit. Of course they could just as easily develop for the 360 and let MS publish so that they can handle the bill again.
I just hope that Mistwalker's new game is NOT an MMO. Please no. Online co-op is fine but no MMOs please.
