I dont think this is a valid point because no one produced a hard drive that would be compatibile with the ps2 besides Sony, it wasn't needed for thousands of games, and the only way to technologically make an MMO feasible on a console at that time was a hard drive.
Resident Evil outbreak used it too, but it was primarily designed for final fantasy XI.
