I remember when I beat ICO in front of her, my wife (then girlfriend) was inconsolable for nearly half an hour. It took me that long to calm her down, to convince her that it was not so terrible as she imagined, that the ending did not mean what she thought.
I found out weeks later that she actually interpreted it in the same way Ueda did.
I was glad that I am free to interpret it differently from the director's vision.
