Dodece, that post ranks among the most awful (and flawed) on these forums. Let's start:

Time for people to get over their Mario fetish, and perhaps oh accept the market for what it is. The market is filled with many genres one of the least popular being Platformers. While one of the most popular being First Person Shooters. Mario cannot be considered for game of the year, because it is in a unpopular genre. Further more it runs on the low definition system. With no serious online play options. In plain lingo its handicapped out of contention.

You should probably brace yourself for more such disappointments. Being the best in one of the least popular genres is probably not going to trump. Being fantastic in one of the more popular genres. By the way thats the way it should be. These contests should be a balance between virtue and popularity. Otherwise you get into a situation where a model train game could beat a Mario. Simply because its the best model train game ever built, and has gigabytes of useless data about train schedules.

Most recent Mario games:

New Super Mario BrosNintendo5.023.202.5910.81
Super Mario SunshineNintendo0.873.731.315.91

Most recent (top selling) shooters:

Halo 2Microsoft0.116.571.678.35

Halo 3Microsoft0.084.081.565.72
Gears Of WarMicrosoft0.083.051.684.81

Now that we are past your ridiculous popularity argument, how about we move onto "handicapped out of contention?" Was the PSX handicapped out of contention? Was the PS2 handicapped out of contention? Because both were the weakest systems of their generation (the PSX by an enormous amount), yet still pulled off some amazing games. Oh, and Super Mario Galaxy is currently the highest rated game of the generation on Gamerankings.

Suck it up and deal with it. The world does not revolve around an Italian plumber mascot, and it hasn't done so for quite some time. How did I know the first second I read the game of the year dozens of Nintendo fans would throw themselves a tantrum. Are you guys really being honest with yourselves. Seriously you know Mario does not belong on that list. The other games have solid claims. Greater mass market appeal, and they have brought innovation to gaming. Mario is very much the same old game we say over ten years ago. With some improvements and twists but its the same game never the less. Which is fine great game then, and great game now. However its hardly revolutionary, and will never have the impact those games on the list will.

CoD4 is (by my experience and the experiences of many others) a remake of CoD2 with modern weapons and much better graphics. Halo 3 is tweaks to the Halo formula. Bioshock is a remake of System Shock 2 with a new setting. Orange Box is absolutely unique and revolutionary. Mass Effect is based on the exact same formula as KOTOR. More has changed from Super Mario Sunshine to Super Mario Galaxy than any of those games I mentioned with the exception of Mass Effect which is most likely on relatively equal footing (when comparing it to KOTOR), and none of those games have anywhere near the mass market appeal of SMG.  In fact, that's so ridiculous I find it hard to believe I actually read that.
