cover system was around before this gen, winback on the N64 had cover system

But how much has it evolved this gen? I mean, the innovations in this list are only upgrades to already existing systems.

Oh, how stupid of me. I should've known better.

the cover system has improved greatly from the N64 days, but it is not innovation, its refinement,  you could say that the cover system got its breakthrough this gen, before this gen it was unnoticed, this gen at least gets credit for popularizing the cover system.
