FF XII was one of the best and at the same time most flawed RPGs I've ever played. It's one of those games I just wish they had changed a few things around, made a few smaller decisions different, and they'ed have made one of the greatest games ever. I still feel it doesn't have nearly as many annoying things going against it as the other games in the series do, so that must count for something.
Regarding the story, I loved aspects of it and hated others, but I basically loved it for the same reasons it's being trashed here. The idea of an RPG where your characters are not important to the main conflict at hand is genius. It reminds me of an old classic comic called Marvels, where it takes place from a civilian's point of view living in New York City as heroes and villians fight and conflict with his daily life and well being. The reason I didn't like the story is because they pussy footed around the premise and still allowed you to get caught up far too much in events that mattered. I'd like to see them go balls to the wall next time with this idea, but I won't hold my breath.
