I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people buy this game because of the AAA reviews and then get a rude awakening when they realize that they are not the intended audience. I also find it amusing that IGN and GameSpot give this AAA while heavily criticizing many previous jrpgs for being too punishing. Perhaps by some random chance both IGN and GameSpot happened to assign diehard jrpg fanatics to this game. That's the problem with reviews. Yes I admit that I pay attention to metacritic and it's an easy shortcut but it doesn't tell the whole story. It seems like game reviews score games with either an everyman perspective (overrating blockbuster big budget games, underrating niche games) or a fanboy perspective (overrating niche games that won't appeal to most of the readers). There is little in between. At the very least, it's good that IGN spells out that Demon's Souls isn't for everyone. Though you just know many people are just going to look at the score and get the game without doing serious research on it.
