Sony is an electronics company while MS is a computer company, Sony designed the PS3 to be a trojan horse for Blu-ray, they've also gone the route of convergence and trying to make more than a video games console, MS designed the Xbox to counter what it saw as a sony attack on its core business with Windows, neither company really is concerned about gaming in general, the gaming market is just a way for them to achieve their other goals. Its the main reason why they are unable to disrupt the market as Nintendo did, because their aim isn't gaming.
