I agree with tallgnome & Faxanadu:
- Civilization 4 (CIV is the best strategy series ever imo)
- Total War (e.g. Medieval II)
- Anno (either Anno 1701 aka 1701 A.D. in NA, or Anno 1404 aka Dawn of Discovery in NA) => best managerial/building sim series at the moment imo

- Age of Mythologies
- Baldur's Gate/Baldur's Gate II/ Neverwinter Nights/Planescape Torment
Great download only games:
- AudioSurf
- Plants vs. Zombies
- World of Goo
- Braid
- The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition
Check Steam for some old and lots of new games.
Check GOG for classic retail games (e.g. Heroes of Might & Magic III, Fallout, Freespace) made downloadable and compatible with XP/Vista/Windows 7.
