None of these empires hold a candle to the kind of dominance that the USA held after the fall of the USSR.

Yeah because ruling over half of the world population for 500 years sure doesn't compare........

What kind of history classes did you take?  The British Empire didn't dominate half the world for anywhere near 5 centures.  It was at it's most powerful for a single century, and even then it had lost the US.  Sure, imperialism went on from ~1580-~1915, but that didn't mean they magically ruled the half the planet the whole time.  Until 1815 with the defeat of Napoleon, they were constantly battling it out with France, Spain, and the Netherlands for supremacy. 

OT: Sensationalists will always be looking for something to cry over.  Just ignore them and move on.
