I think price cut/slim were a necessity for Sony so thus have come too early this gen. I also think it can shorten the lifespan, as it will be the consumers/retailers who decide how long the product will be in the marketplace NOT the manufacturer and they are not going to accept constant hardware revisions etc.

In my opinion the N64 was not just the best console of the 5th gen but, to this day the best console ever created!
