There are plenty of third-party Japanese (and especially Korean) 360 exclusive games that haven't jumped ship to the PS3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_exclusives Go through that list and you'll notice plenty of true Japanese 360 exclusives. Many of them released in Japan only to boot (which you'd normally think of as an insane thing to do). So there's no guarantee that Magna Carta II will make the trip. If you look at how crappy the sales for Magna Carta II were compared to the 360 jrpgs in Japan, it's clear that Japan doesn't have much of an interest in this franchise. It costs money to make a port and it's definitely not cheap to port to the PS3. With demand for this game being poor in Japan they'll probably not even bother with the PS3 port. They've already lost enough money as is. If they port to the PS3, they're not gonna recover the costs of porting it and they'll end up losing even more money. At the very least, wait half a year or so or until Magna Carta II gets a nice price cut (say you get it $30). By then if there is no PS3 announcement, 360 exclusivity is pretty much in the bag and you can go buy the game no worries. TLR was announced multi-plat right at the beginning but then the PS3 port got cancelled and then they started it up again. That's why it took them longer than usual to announce it for PS3 (about 10 months from the 360 release to be exact). But honestly anyone whose crying that TLR is getting ported after paying a bargain $20/$30 for the 360 version is overreacting. You might as well stop buying third-party exclusive games altogether (and it doesn't just go 360 -> PS3, it's sometimes the other way around. ie. 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 was upgraded from the PS3 version) if people are going to be that paranoid. As for Microsoft, I agree that they should be criticized for being short-sighted. They just throw money at the Japan problem as a short-term band-aid instead of looking towards the future by focusing on fresh new IPs that they can own. There are plenty of experienced, talented small Japanese developers out there that they can purchase to ensure that their games stay exclusive. The fact that Microsoft doesn't actually own Mistwalker is abolutely mindblowing (Sakaguchi once said that he wouldn't rule out multi-platform development in the future. That must mean Mistwalker is independent even though MS gave Sakaguchi money to help start up the company). Absolutely mindblowing! Blue Dragon was behind only Star Ocean 4 in 360 japan sales and Lost Odyssey sold over 800,000 worldwide. It would be a HUMILIATION if MS allowed say Blue Dragon 2 or Lost Odyssey 2 (assuming it gets a sequel) on the PS3. Remmber, just because it says Microsoft Games Studios on the box doesn't mean Microsoft owns the actual IP. They own Infinite Undiscovery IP but not BD or LO IP. So they should buy Mistwalker as well as a number of smaller Japanese developers. On a related note, there's still no PS3 NA announcement for ToV so this should be interesting. lol. (Remember, the PS2 release of ToS never got released outside Japan) If you know Japanese, it's not a problem to import obviously but it'll be amusing to see non-Japanese speaking Tales fanboys import a game in a language they don't understand just so they can play as some pirate loli girl and play around with a few extras. |
Well said, you should become a regular poster, i agree with 90% of what you stated here the other 10 about Magna Carta not to much, because i feel by the time (if it has not gone PS3 yet mind you.) i buy it, it may very well be in the $5 to $20 area more rather then $30.
Other then that, i agree 100% with what you said, very well thought out and fair. good one on ta.
