I think badgenome has it. The orb-weaver family has a wide variety of sub-species, so it might not be a marbled orb-weaver, but one of his cousins.
They're all over North America. There's a species that pops up around my corner of Canuckistan. The common features seem to be large size considering the climate, meaty legs with sparse hair, a disgustingly fat abdomen, and of course, those lovely webs.
