Still have to consider price/performance factor.
The 5870 currently runs $380; a pair of 4850s while not the same performance-wise (but not a huge gap), cost about $200.
Realize that the 5870 will be close to $100 less (or more) in about 6 months when factoring in upgrade times.
The cheapest GTX295 runs about $500 by comparison, scheduled to drop as soon as the R300s debut (which may also be when we see the first drops on the 5870).
Best advice: wait on the 5870 if you aren't using a totally dated VGA solution today (six months, maybe less).
