People have been killing people long before the invention of guns. taking away guns won't stop that.
Besides, it's normally the bullets that do the dirty work. A gun on it's own might make a good club though.
pieces of srtring and cutlery can also be used to kill people.
Should those be banned too?

Pieces of string and cutlerly aren't designed for killing people. Unlike, say, an assualt rifle. That is a very very key difference.
Also if you really want to be pedantic people with loaded guns are better at killing than people without loaded guns.
Also where did I ever say I wanted a ban on guns? I just want strong regulation on who can own what and where they can use it and what they can use it for.

100% agreed.
My argument (if you can call it that) is that people will always find ways and means to kill people with anything they can find if they're determined enough, including their bare hands if necessary.
Stopping guns altogether will never stop violence.

Oh yeah, guns aren't the only means of violence, nor the most common. However they have the problem of being one of the most instantaneous and deadly.
I really just don't want a few things.
1) People being able to own limitless amounts of guns / unregistered guns.
2) People being able to own stupid guns (ie. assault rifles).
3) People being able to carry guns around in public.
4) People who clearly aren't really that mentally stable being allowed access to guns.
