You are misunderstanding his argument. It is an extension of the "Hate the sin, not the sinner," mentality commonly found in christianity. Being gay is not a problem for many of the various factions of christianity. Catholocism I know for certain has no issue with any of its members being homosexual. What turns you on is almost entirely irrlevant. Where you get into trouble is by breaking Natural Law. So the official stance of the church is not influenced by whether or not homosexuality is a choice. Engaging in sex with a member of the same sex (or in any maner that will not lead to procreation) is a choice that violoates Natural Law and is thus a sin.
