It's not knee jerk to want to see a man who admits to his crime paying for it, thats just common sense.
He did it. He admits it. He ran. Now he should finish paying for it and the justice system should work out how he should pay and for how long.
Plain and simple the man needs to come and face his past. There is no information that changes that fact. In fact any information you or Onymeth care to bring up is truly only valid once he does come back. Because the court of public opinion is not where the man needs to clear his name (despite many braindead celebrities and foreign politicians who think that is the case), where he needs to clear his name is in a court of law. Which is exactly where he should have handled the issue over thirty years ago.
This really isn't a complicated issue.
