You say that you really wanted to like JRPG's this generation, but then you go ahead and call FF extremely cliched.
Granted, FF may not be everyone's cup of tea, but there are a lot of JRPG's that are far from cliched and that will annul every wrong notion of JRPG's, if you go play them with an open mind, because it's up to you to adapt to the game you're playing instead of the game having to be exactly like you want it, because no game will ever be like that.
If, and I put emphasis on the IF, you want to try some JRPG's that are different from the commom JRPG ground, i suggest you either play Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Raidou Kazuhona vs The Souless Army, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile, Odin Sphere, Mana Khemia, Earthbound and Terranigma.
If you ever play one of them, you'll be in for a good surprise, as long as you don't go there just to trash the game, like what it seems you want to do for every JRPG.

I agree with this.

Slimebeast, I love WRPG's. I d think WRPG's this gen have done better than JRPG's have ever done. Largely thanks to Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and Oblivion. But Lost Odyssey, Valkyrie Chronicles and White Knight have all impressed. As have Tales Of Vesperia and FF13 looks like it's shaping really well. Also End Of Eternity looks good to. Give some a chance and try them. Lost Odyssey was a really good game. Many PS3 owners will tell you that Valkyrie was awesome to.

Lestatdark u listed lots of unknown JRPGs. Im not familiar with them, xcept for Valkyri Stories, but I saw that on that site which ppl can post videos from playtrhoughs on (name of site escaped me). I didn't like it. But I gues i have to check out a couple of the other games u listed.

selnor, how can u say anything about Valkrie Chronicles or White Knight when u dont own a PS3? Lost Odyssey, I think i never gave that a chance because of the combo of JRPG-scepticism and that it has these mechanized monsters. Plus it dont have a demo.

I've played the Tales demo, Eternal Sonata, SO 4 and Blue Dragon demos. I didnt like the linear gameplay and the manga style. But I was mostly shocked about the arena battles, how bad and un-fun that kind of gameplay is.

I dunno, do all JRPGs have these turn based arena battles?

Not every JRPG has those kind of turn based arena battles, but i do agree that most of them do. From the ones I listed, Shin Megami Tensei, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Odin Sphere and Terranigma all of them have battles in actual on-screen gameplay, they don't jump to an arena, and they allow you to dodge, move around, prepare your actions, and plan on-the-move strategies to actually beat the battles. Most of them are turn based, but you don't have to sit around waiting for your turn to happen, since that will spell doom in those games.
