Similar failure rate? I don't think that there is data on the new models and the 10% failure rate of the PS3 is also related to the Phatz and not to the Slim. Makes it hard to compare like with like.

I understood that the failiure rate for 2009 was 360 12% and PS3 11% from the last study posted in these forums somewhere.

No that was all failiures for any models that were made after October 2008. The article was posted here somewhere. I'll try and find it.

I remember reading the article and that they provided data for failures excluding RROD. Not sure whether that was pre or after 2008 though.
Also a 'failure' in these studies is that they fail to take into account the longitudinal aspects. It is obvious that newer models fail less because they have had less time to do so. This applies to the PS3 which has been less on the market. Also the lower failure rate of the Wii was still biased - using a console 6 hours a day is not the same as using it for 3 hours on 2 days.
Guess we'll need to do a 'scientific' study on the matter and pit gamers in rooms to see which console fails first!
