He raped her, sodomized her, etc. but plea bargained down to concensual sex with a minor. What's funny is that what he ran from was a 90 day psychiatric prison sentence he was allowed to come and go from to continue working. He already did 42 days. So yes, this man has been on the run for 30 something years because he didn't want another 47 days in psychiatric care.

There's more to the story on his end. He believed the judge was going to go back on the plea bargain and imprison him for the full charges, because he found out the judge was talking to the DA or something, and because frankly the judge hated him and didn't particularly like jews at all. Now the judge is dead, but now Polanski has to answer for evading the law on top of his original sentence, so he pleads for them to throw the case out from abroad.

Frankly I think the law has bent over backwards for him, and he's gotten away with so many shitty things because of his celebrity status and problems traveling. He sued Vanity Fair, an american magazine, in british court while giving video testimony from France because he can't be in the UK for extradition reasons and the US wouldn't hear the case since he wouldn't show up for it. He was the first person in history supposedly to be allowed to pull some shit like this. Plus he won.

There was a lot of mess in the first case for sure but it doesn't change simple facts:

1) he brought here there with him to the party

2) he knew perfectly well how old is she

3) despite all this she was drunk and drugged and they made sex together

That alone should be enough to place him in prison for lot longer than 90 days
