You say that you really wanted to like JRPG's this generation, but then you go ahead and call FF extremely cliched.
Granted, FF may not be everyone's cup of tea, but there are a lot of JRPG's that are far from cliched and that will annul every wrong notion of JRPG's, if you go play them with an open mind, because it's up to you to adapt to the game you're playing instead of the game having to be exactly like you want it, because no game will ever be like that.
If, and I put emphasis on the IF, you want to try some JRPG's that are different from the commom JRPG ground, i suggest you either play Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Raidou Kazuhona vs The Souless Army, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile, Odin Sphere, Mana Khemia, Earthbound and Terranigma.
If you ever play one of them, you'll be in for a good surprise, as long as you don't go there just to trash the game, like what it seems you want to do for every JRPG.
