Different directions on the analog nub. Pressing left on it is the same as pressing L2, and so forth and so on. Like I said, the majority of PS1 games didn't use analog, or had an option for analog or d-pad, but not both. If you use the analog nub, the d-pad is L1 and L2. If you use the d-pad, the analog nub is L1 and L2. This can be switched in the in game options screen.
