All you'd really have to do is just plug in the monitor and it would work, that's why. Also as somebody else recommended, plugging it into your computer via DVI is better than with VGA (digital signal)

Of course, that doesn't account for stuff like the resolution being set to work with the previous montior (as you've seen).

Also, what model number is that? A simple picture doesn't really say anything especially since I'm not familiar with Dell's mondels.
