Yep that`s exactly the problem with jrpgs. They are too long and tedious. The fact that Auto Battle + Fast Forward (basically if you don`t want to have to fight boring pointless random after random and just want to get to the fun stuff already (boss), just let the AI take care of it and fast forward while your exp and skill points go up) in Enchanted Arms made the game fun for me suggests that jrpgs would be so much better if there weren`t so many boring, tedious encounters (even if there`s no randoms in a game, you`ll still end up fighting swarms of on-screen enemies and even if you do a great job of avoiding them real well, you will be underleveled). Do they really need to give us all those monsters to fight? If we take say a 60 hour game, I say cut the number of encounters in dungeons by 3X, give out 3X more exp for these encounters and make the battles more meaningful. You could also cut back on the ridiculously long narratives and cutscenes. Do you really need that much time to tell these mediocre cliched fantasy or sci-fi fiction tales? A 20 hour main quest + tons of side content type of format would be ideal. Western RPGs these days seem to be following this model and they`ve been very successful. And make it more non-linear like in the old days. Naturally the die-hard conservative jrpg fan who clings to the old ways of the genre would consider the 20 hour main quest suggestion blasphemy but the die-hard conservative jrpg fan isn`t paying the bills. Jrpg devs are losing money on these HD games because they are too expensive to make and they aren`t getting enough sales. If you want to cater to that diehard crowd, stick to the DS and the Wii where the development costs are low. If you want to play on the big consoles, you need to stop making tedious games.
