Not really. There is a market for standalones for those who just don't want a game console, no matter how good it is. Subsidizing the S300 would destroy any chance Panasonic, etc. have of making a profit on Blu-Ray.


So you're saying that Blu-Ray won't be able to compete on price?

 

 I would say that you won't see any "sell at a loss" deals on the blu-ray side unless sony wants to alienate the other manufacturers OR the manufacturers of Blu-Ray decide that it is worth long-term sales possibilities if they lose money now.  I guess we'll see but I would think that if the blu-ray makers could sell profitably at $199, they would...
