Seriously, if I were launching a console and had to pick one region to flop in, Japan would be it. And don't tell me about the importance of Japanese developers. They're just as happy selling games to other parts of the world as they are selling to the home crowd, and already making games accordingly.
When Korea and China become a big part of the console market, success in the Asian markets will probably become more important, but that still might not necessitate performing well in Japan. Even regional neighbours can have widely varying tastes. Look at Europe.
