It always was so far as I know. 2 main characters, if you play on your own then AI for the other or you play with a buddy. Right from the start the title looks to have taken the template and Gears for coop and made that central to the design. I guess the difference, and while it's more of a twist than something radical I think it's an interesting one, is that the characters employ very different fighting approaches - so it's not coop with matching characters, but different skillsets and abilities, which should open up some interesting scenarios.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
