I would have thought 3rd person shooter a'la Gears and 3rd person slash/hack like DMC would work together very well. Main challenge I feel would be the camera, it needs to be standard 3rd person, zoom in for the over the shoulder shooting view and probably zoom out a bit for the slash / hack - but DMC4 showed it can be done fairly readily with only minor camera quibbles, so I figure they should get that working fine.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
