Functionality isn't the issue, its comfort and ease of use, you think most people are going to want to hold the controller one handed while manipulating the wand with the other? It doesn't sound comfortable and will probably put off a lot of people.

i've just tried to hold DS3 with one hand, it's really not that different from holding a nunchuk (for adults).
for kids, maybe will be a little bit too big. but i think the kiddy games will only require the wand.
they are not supposed to play FPS or TPS anyway.
