A great deal of the major PS3 titles people are looking forward to are multi-platform titles with 360 or enhanced ports. Plus Sony won't even have their motion sensor controller ready for a while still (and even then, it's after Natal and AFTER Wiimote + Motion Plus).
PS3 is pretty much a system running in the same place as GameCube last gen, but on the budget and fans of PS2. If Sony really wants to make headway, they'll cut their losses and work on the next system, instead of trying to continue this ridiculous slug fest with 360 to save face by coming in 'second place'.
