No. hype did nothing. The fact the PS2 was more desirable with a DVD player and Sony had earned a reputation from the PS1 whereas sega screwed the pooch with the sega CD and sega saturn and sega didnt manufacture enough Dreamcasts upon launch and keep supply up for demand are why the dreamcast failed. Sega is to blame, no one else. sorry. You put out 2 terriblely received consoles before the dreamcast, you dont make enough product to sell and keep people happy and the product penetration up and consant combined with tech that was inferier (no dvd) is how the dreamcast fell from grace. |
That's right, Sega earned a great reputation with the Megadrive/Genesis, and they ruined it with 2 failed add-ons (CD & 32x) and a console with a lot of problems (Saturn), I remember devs complaining about 1: Using quadrilaterals instead of triangles, 2: Not being able to handle both chips, 3: Reading issues, 4: Sega pulled the plug waay too early like with the previous add-ons so devs went berserk at this point...
Dreamcast is a genius console with great games, but between the ruined reputation, the piracy issues and shortage problems, (not to mention that they did almost the same thing that Ninty did with the 1.5 GB minidisc) no wonder they failed...
