From what I remember, Nintendo and Sony did have a partnership; sony was going to make CD based games for the Super nintendo but Nintendo backaway pretty far into development. When nintendo struck sony down, it became more powerful than anyone could have imagined.
And the rest, as they say, is history. epic games and record breaking sales
