Sonic has nothing against Mario. Mario's 2d games were far superior. All you had to do in Sonic was just run rght and you'd finish the level. And when you had to jump in the actual platform bits, you would only die because the jump animation and timing sucked.
Again in 3d Mario kicks Sonics arse. For pretty much the same reasons. And not to forget Marios level design wiped the floor with Sonics from Sonic 1 to now.
