Hell, years ago I looked into going to Draughons Jr. College (which is just a private run job training college) and for a two year course it was 30 thousand dollars. The local university charges slightly more (about 17-18k a year), and this isn't some top notch famous university. I know a guy that is just about to get out of medical school and be a doctor and he's 200k in the hole. Ironically in order to afford these colleges you need government grants (or wealthy parents). Other wise you're going to spend a decade or decades paying what essentially amounts to an extra mortgage payment in addition to all of your normal life expenses after college. Makes me wonder how many young "small government" enthusiasts took grant money to go to college without batting an eye.

I didn't.  Though I went to a community college for 2 years then transfered to a 4 year.

Though i actually think government grants for schooling is a good idea.

The more educated the a populace is the better... and a lot of underprivldeged people's parents are so shitty they can't get regular loans.

Never fair that your parents having poor credit screws you.

Yeah, I didn't get any grants either. Due to some strange personal history I didn't qualify for anything related to school, my parents didn't have jack as far as money went, and I was too responsible to qualify for any of the "leg up" grants as it were. If I had been unemployed, and had ten kids by twelve different women then I would've gotten some cash, but no such luck for a guy that actually works to support himself.

Really, they should just be trying to force as many people into college as possible. Not really "FORCE" but you get the idea. The US is really starting to fall behind in terms of engineers and scientists compared to other countries to such an extent that it's ridiculous. All the capitalism in the world doesn't mean jack shit if you're country is grossly uneducated, and every other country is pumping out engineers. They really need to be finding ways to get people into school, because even if you're hard working and intelligent, getting into college is a pain in the ass and a huge financial risk that can ruin you for decades if you don't find high paying employment right away. I wonder how many geniuses are flipping burgers because they can't afford to throw down a few thousand dollars each semester, plus loans that must be paid after graduating in an incredibly uncertain market.

Grants or no grants, our higher education system is fucked and it's really going to show ten years from now and beyond (though it is already starting to show). They really need to find a way to get people into college in such a fashion that it isn't such a ridiculous burden and/or risk. Going to college shouldn't be something you're afraid will ruin you.
