My view is still the same as in the past. The PS3 and 360 problems can't be compared, evidence suggests that even when cutting out the RROD 360 issues (vast majority of issues) 360s still fail more than PS3s (all kinds of failures combined).
I think the original PS3 (probably the US model more so) is more prone to overheating problems than the later units and the later units are more prone to Blu-Ray reading related failures than the older model (haven't read anything about the slim yet). Sony provides 1 year manufacturer warranty on this, which is the same for Microsoft (as minus RROD issues 360 the remaining hardware failures usually not covered by 3 year warranty is still more significant), not the mention well known about and deeply investigated 360 disc scratching issues.
If your PS3 does fail, it's out of normal warranty and you did noting wrong with the device. IMO still take it back to the retailer (a PS3 should work problem free for at the very least 3 years), if they aren't helpful (normal procedure, almost everywhere), write a letter and ask to talk to the manager. I think in many cases at the bigger stores things can be sorted out this way and come to a satisfactory conclusion.
