On the UK gaming forum I post on about 10 people had this problem and all got their PS3 replaced free of charge out of warranty. They just rung them up and yelled a bit, no trouble at all. Maybe Sony's paying initiative is a new thing though.
If Watchdog's sample is really only 3 Ps3s of which one is modded then they've no right to air anything about this.
