Free may be not cheap enough depending on how much it inconveniences you.
I work on a quite varied schedule and taking time for ten times to contact a call center, receive a box, ship it back, and receive the repaired/refurbished one would be a lot of trouble to me especially as not everywhere in the world there are as good conditions when it comes to couriers and shippings.
I don't own a 360, btw, and the only console that failed me was my Wii, once. Just saying that the fact that they replace it for free is the minimum they can do, but it still makes it a hassle for many people and they have all the right to complain.
