I just know from my experience that there were a lot more Atari and Nintendo around in the 80's than C-64. Cartridges was a lot more convenient and faster than waiting on the extremely slow C-64 floppy drive to load a game. Even before that it was a tape recorder. I still remember the awful sounds the floppy drive made.
