Uh....Back in the late 70s, PCs (including Macs) were the ONLY venue for gaming. Following this, we had Atari and NES come out, but PCs were still huge. Especially in Japan and Europe, PCs not only held vast marketshare, but rivaled the consoles. Indeed, the PC units spawned many of the Console hits and many games that came out on the Atari or NES were also on PC platforms such as MSX, Commodore or IBM (Dragon Quest, Metal Gear, Castlevania, Maniac Mansion, etc). Plus, the PC was way ahead of the consoles in certain areas of innovation and processing power. While the Genesis and Super Nintendo was just coming out, the PC was coming out with games like Tie Fighter and Sim City 2000. Its arguable to say that PC was more successful than consoles for quite a while. It wasn't until around the mid 90s that consoles really started to overtake the PC market. Mostly because of a combination of a lot of good PC developers began to taper off of making good solid games and because consoles kept rising in both quality and quantity. As soon as the Playstation and N64 came out, the PC had some major competition. But at that time, they had little to offer aside from Blizzard and a fledgling FPS market. Many of its key genres had either lost interest or support from developers (simulation games, action/adventure games, puzzle games, etc). Some of these genres are coming back now, but its only due to the effort of very select companies. |
You don't know anything. Consoles were the first ones to reach the public, and PCs only did the same 10 years after the consoles. In the 70's and early 80's, the PC gaming scene was pretty much composed of hobbyists making small PC games as a hobby. And it was only in the 90's that PC reached mainstream, something consoles had done in the 80's.
PC gaming was never bigger than Console gaming, but now it is starting to challenge them. PC gaming will keep gaining space the more this gen continues.
