Actually, you have someone else to thank for that (as well as a Sony arch-nemesis) - Kasuhiko Nishi (I think that's the spelling).

Sony actually got into the video game business before its involvement with Nintendo. Co-developed with Microsoft (!) and responsible for the breakthroughs of some of today's most beloved franchises, the Sony MSX series was their first gaming "console".

Funny how things pan out with cutthroat businesses - bedmates one day, sworn enemies the next!
